Website Hosting - Selecting A Web Hosting Service III

In today's market it's very easy to find website hosting services that offer five to thirty gigabytes of storage. In today's market it's very easy to find website hosting services that offer five to thirty gigabytes of storage. Thanks to the steady drop in storage costs hosts are able to offer huge amounts of disk space at a low price. Realistically, you could host a successful domain on a few megabytes of storage space. On the other hand, if store video files, audio files, or a database or two on your domain, you may need 30GB of storage for a single domain. Text files and basic web pages need very little storage space. Multimedia files require a lot.

Your website bandwidth needs will be dependent on two primary factors: the types of files you're hosting, and your traffic. For example, if a 50MB video is downloaded 100 times during a 30-day period, that translates to 5GB of traffic. You get the picture. A 50KB text file downloaded 100,000 times also translates to 5GB of traffic. Remember, traffic measurements also include traffic to your server from the rest of the internet.

As far as email accounts are concerned, a home-based online business may need up to ten unique email addresses for the day-to-day business. If you're a webhost reseller, some of your clients may need a few dozen unique email addresses, or even a few hundred if you have a mid-sized business as a client.

Many businesses require a database. Most hosting accounts offer one or two open-source databases: either MySQL or PostgreSQL. Many hosts also offer Microsoft's SQL product. This latter one usually costs extra, and for most businesses there is no need to go this route. MySQL is considerably more popular than PostgreSQL, but they are both top-notch products. Either one will be able to handle whatever you throw at it, even if your business skyrockets. Your bigger concern at that point will be upgrading to a more powerful platform. More on platform power in the next segment.
